PHPG, the sponsor of this event, is a micro-lending organization based in Williston, VT. Isabel and Alex Tuck are the creators, organizers, and overseers of this non-profit organization that provides individuals with the tools necessary to eliminate the suffering that they and their families are experiencing due to extreme poverty.
PHPG implements many different strategies to assist building communities in the developing world. The work is focused on supporting community members so they grow towards becoming economically sustainable and are able to better support their families. People Helping People Global determines project location based on extreme poverty rates and the project viability within each region. In 2009, they pinpointed Nicaragua as a region of extreme need due to its statistical ranking as the 2nd most impoverished nation in the western hemisphere after Haiti. The loans (ranging from $50 - $400) are interest free – and the payback rate is over 90%.
