The Pownal Historical Society presents Ray Rodrigues: The Mysteries of the Three Seth Hudsons, Sunday, October 27th at the Solomon Wright Public Library, 97 Main St., Pownal. 2 p.m. Open to the Public
Was Seth Hudson, one of the original grantees of land in Pownal, a counterfeiter who faked his own death to avoid legal problems or an admirable leader? Described by one person as "the greatest villain of the age" and by another person as "a man of merit on many grounds," the truth about the man who convened the first meeting of the town's proprietors remains a puzzle. Ray Rodrigues will guide us through what we know and do not know, asking audience members to try to solve those mysteries.
With Wendy Hopkins and Charlotte Comar, Ray was an author of the Arcadia photo book Pownal. With Dawn Rodrigues, he edited and updated Joe Parks' history,Pownal--A Town's Two Hundred Years and More. He retired from the University of Texas--Brownsville, where he was the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. His article on Seth Hudson appeared in the September 2011 Walloomsac Review, published by the Bennington Museum.
