Tracking Club gathers monthly to look for wildlife track and sign in different natural areas in and around Burlington. These gatherings are free, informal, and open to all experience levels. The goal is to connect with Burlington's wildlife and learn from each other as we explore.
In January we will be visiting a 66-acre wetland parcel adjacent to the Winooski River, north of Ethan Allen Park. This land was purchased and preserved by the state as mitigation for the wetlands impacted by the construction of Route 127. The area looks somewhat like an island, isolated by the barriers of 127 and the river, but it also offers a lot of wildlife corridor potential for animals moving along and across the water. We will be looking for signs of deer, coyote, beaver, mink, fisher and more.
Don't be discouraged by weather! There should be plenty to see in mud, ice or snow. Dress warmly (think layers) in consideration of a slow pace. Warm, waterproof boots suitable for off-trail travel recommended. Bring water and/or a hot beverage, notebook and ruler/measuring tape optional.
