14th annual MountainTop Film Festival
features “Films for Thought”
that have the power to move and educated

The 14th annual MountainTop Film Festival - a human rights film festival in honor or Martin Luther King, Jr., will once again offer a diverse program of documentary and dramatic films, addressing social and environmental issues from around the world.

The festival takes place January 13-19, 2017 at the Big Picture Theater in Waitsfield VT.

The MountainTop Film Festival brings to life social issues, human and civil rights abuses, and environmental concerns through storytelling in a way that challenges each individual to empathize and demand justice for all people. These “Films for Thought” bear witness to issues from around the world and create a forum for courageous individuals and empowers audiences with the knowledge that personal commitment can make a difference.

Some of the festival highlights are:
I AM NOT YOUR NEGRO (US 2017)
Raoul Peck’s account of James Baldwin’s book “Remember this House” uncovers the larger narrative of America’s historical and current denial and irrational relationship with race.

SONITA (France 2016)
After her family attempts to sell her into marriage, a young Afghan refugee in Iran channels her frustrations and seizes her destiny through music. Grabbing the mic, she spits fiery rhymes in the face of oppressive traditions.

FIRE AT SEA (Italy 2016)
Lampedusa, a once peaceful Mediterranean island that has become a major entry point for African refugees into Europe where thousands of men, women and children are trying to survive the crossing from Africa in boats that are too small for such a journey-.

SEED - THE UNTOLD STORY (US 2016)
This film follows passionate seed keepers from around the world, protecting food legacy as biotech chemical companies control and manipulate the majority of our seeds.

The festival strives to use film to tell human stories that have the power to move and educate. MountainTop offers an educational outreach program to area high schools and makes free daytime screenings available for interested students and teachers. Students with a valid ID get to attend festival films for free.

Films and events will run in both theaters — please note length of films to ensure your desired schedule! Tickets and festival passes will be available at the box office at the Big Picture Theater, Waitsfield VT (802-496-8994).
