Dear Neighbors,
I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful holiday season and a very happy new year. I feel most fortunate to serve as one of your City Councilors and count among my blessings the relationships I enjoy with so many of you.
This coming Monday, the City Council will convene its first of two meetings for the month of January.
We will begin our Council meeting at 7pm in Contois Auditorium.
In addtion to a consent agenda, Council committee reports and comments from Councilors and the Mayor, we will have a presentation from the School Department on their budget and their facilities conditions assessment. The School Department is seeking voter approval to borrow up to $19 million to establish a Capital Reserve to address deferred maintenance needs. In addition, the School Department is authorized to issue up to $2 million in bonds annually. Combining the $2 million annual figure for 10 years, the total investment over this decade would be $39 million. The report lists the estimated impact of bonding for the $19 million as a 2.29% change in the property tax rate. On a median home in Burlington, assessed at $231,000, the dollar impact would be $91 annually or $8 a month.
As with all Council meetings, please keep in mind that you are always welcome to come and speak to the Council on any subject you wish during our Public Forum which begins at 7:30pm. Clickable agenda items can be found on the City's website via board docs at: http://www.boarddocs.com/vt/burlingtonvt/Board.nsf/Public All Council meetings are televised live on BT Channel 317 and streamed live to your computer or phone.
As always, I welcome your questions and concerns. Please be in touch over the weekend and on Monday.
Again, my best wishes to you, your family and friends for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2017!
My best,
Karen
