Last-minute reminder! The U-32 board meets tonight to review next year's budget draft #4. We may vote it through at this time, since proposed budgets must go to town clerks by January 16 at the latest.
To recap the situation: it's unfavorable. On one hand, enrollment is down. On the other hand, administrative and special education costs are sharply up, driven by higher-echelon government mandates and the school's need to put back together what society has broken in order for education to be able to happen at all.
Even with more than $300,000 (about 2% of the budget) in position reductions, we're still looking at significantly higher spending per pupil (which means the likelihood of higher taxes). We have no good options; the best we can do is minimize the all-around badness.
We welcome you to attend our meeting, look at and hear about the current budget information, consider the administration’s latest recommendations, and weigh in with your own views.
