On January 17 voters in Jericho will have the opportunity to vote on zoning regulation revisions which were drafted by the Planning Commission in 2016. The revisions were needed to ensure that Jericho is in compliance with state and regional requirements, as well as to reflect the goals of the Town Plan which was approved in April. Both the Planning Commission and the Select Board held hearings on the revisions, but subsequent the Select Board’s approval of the document, a petition bearing the names of 218 residents was filed to overturn that approval.
The vote will take place at MMU from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on January 17 with absentee ballots available prior to the vote at Town Hall. The Planning Commission and Select Board urge residents to vote YES to uphold the regulations. The majority of the revisions are minor in nature and none of them create restrictions on how a property can be used. The revisions include a limit of 12,000 square feet for building footprints with the exception of agricultural buildings, the Riverside district which has its own zoning and the Commercial District where buildings can be as large as 30,000 square feet which is the size of the Jeri-Hill warehouse. Another change is the prohibition of new parking lots in front of buildings to prevent the appearance of strip development. This prohibition has already been in place in both the Village and Village Center districts and now it has been expanded to other areas.
