New Year's Eve Sunset Hike on Hogback

Past event
Dec 31, 2016, 3:30 to 5 PM

Join us for a late afternoon trek in the Hogback Mountain Conservation Area at 3:30 on New Year’s Eve, Saturday, Dec. 31, 2016. We’ll head to the fire tower on the summit of Mount Olga, where we’ll enjoy watching the last sunset of the year. Then we’ll wend our way back to the parking lot in the deepening twilight, in plenty of time to make it to more traditional New Year’s Eve parties. It’s a short half-mile hike to the summit, but it is uphill all the way. The trail follows an old service road that zigzags across the former ski area, so none of it is very steep. If we get any fresh snow, snowshoes would be appropriate. Otherwise, some kind of non-skid cleats or grippers will probably be in order. Meet in the parking lot near the white A-frame building just west of the gift shop on Route 9. Questions? Contact HMCA at hmca@hogbackvt.org.

And don’t forget the First Day hike on Hogback being hosted by the Southern Vermont Natural History Museum. Meet at 10:00 on Sunday, New Year’s Day, at the scenic overlook on Route 9, with snowshoes or other appropriate footwear, for a 1.5 – 2 hour ramble on some of the less steep trails in the conservation area. For more info about this hike, contact the museum at vermontmuseum.org.
