Walden School District Special Meeting Tuesday

Hey, Walden folks - There’s a special meeting of the Walden School District on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. at the Walden School, to act on a voter petition to change the date of the School District’s annual meeting from mid-May back to Town Meeting Day.

[Background: Last winter, the Walden School Board warned a special meeting of the School District, to consider moving the annual meeting to mid-May. In its annual report, the Board noted “Every year we are faced with changes from Montpelier that come too late in the budgeting process to incorporate into the Town & School Report. Since the school budget is based on many changing elements such as student numbers and needs, we can more accurately predict costs if we are working closer to the time for which we are budgeting.” At that special meeting, held on Feb. 27th, citizens considered a range of arguments pro and con, then voted 26-21 to approve the date change.]

I encourage all Walden voters to attend Tuesday evening’s meeting and weigh in on this decision. (Note that everyone who’s registered to vote in the Town of Walden is also a voter in the Walden School District.)

This is a traditional “floor” meeting - everyone will have the opportunity to speak to the proposed action, and you must be present in order to vote. (FYI, the February meeting lasted an hour - so it seems likely this one won’t go on for a long time.)

If you have any questions about meeting procedures, or if you’d like to receive a copy of the minutes of the February special meeting and/or the petition calling for Tuesday’s meeting (PDF, 177KB), please contact me.
