Potluck and Report-back on Standing Rock

~ The Make Presents ~
The Solidarity Builders Delegation and Supply Caravan to Standing Rock
Community Report Back
Thursday December 8th, 6pm
The Unitarian Universalist Church
130 Main Street, Montpelier

Please join us and enjoy a bowl of solidarity soup while we hear stories and see pictures from a group of builders and activists just returning from a solidarity volunteer trip to the Indigenous Water Protectors Camp at Standing Rock ND. We'll share updates about the campaign and ways to continue to support this Indigenous led movement for sovereignty, water, land and survival. THANK YOU to all who donated supplies and money and support to this trip, it would not have been possible or as meaningful without each of you. We were so grateful to represent part of our community and contribute to the work being done out there, and we want to give you the chance to hear how it went. Hope to see you Thursday night.

We will be accepting donations to continue to support the work in Standing Rock, but the main focus of this event is getting together with you all, so don't feel compelled to donate. You can also feel free to bring a dish or something nice to share, or just yourself.

We Still Stand with Standing Rock
Under the ongoing pressure from Indigenous Water Protectors and their allies The Army Corps of Engineers released a statement Sunday that they will not be granting the permit to drill under the Missouri River, and that the project must go through an an Environmental Impact Statement process. This is a huge victory for the movement, however the Water Protectors and allies have vowed to keep this effort going, as the Army Corps statement is threatened by the incoming Trump administration, the possibility of court appeals, and whatever may happen after the Environmental Impact Statement for DAPL is complete.

We're channeling the remaining money we raised, and our coordination energies, into an ongoing construction project on the Standing Rock Reservation, a large facility for long-term organizing and gathering that is being organized by a great team of inter-tribal leaders and construction pros, including Tom Goldtooth of the Indigenous Environmental Network. (More on that below). Some resources could still go toward helping get indigenous allies and grassroots leaders and out to Standing Rock to work and collaborate beyond building and construction, but we don't have a clear sense what is going to be asked for, yet.

In the short term, the Battle of Standing Rock has changed what it means to be involved in building a resistance movement and the face of the grassroots across the country. This is the evolution of non-violence, on an escalated scale and rooted in spiritual foundations, that we can all hope to see mirrored in other efforts in the near future. We are looking forward to the opportunities to follow this leadership amid the groundswell of social movement participation as we face the significant challenges before us. If you haven't checked out the report in We Are Mother Earth's Red Line, it's worth a look. It offers a glimpse into the strategic orientation and assessment of the Indigenous Environmental Network, Grassroots Global Justice, and the Climate Justice Alliance, a consortium of People of Color leadership in the Climate Justice Movement.
Sorry for the late notice, we hope you can make it.

Thank you!
