In 1659 the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony banned Christmas declaring it a criminal offense. The Puritans were trying to suppress a holiday marked by rowdy behavior and drunkeness by poor 'wassailers' who extorted food and drink from the well-to-do.
The Underhill Historical Society is sponsoring a talk by local author, Stephen Nissenbaum, who penned the book "Battle For Christmas" on the Puritans and the history of Christmas. Nissenbaum is a Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Massachusetts.
