In 1659 the Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony banned Christmas making it a criminal offense. The Puritans were attempting to suppress a holiday marked by rowdy behavior and drunkeness by poor "wassailers" who extorted food and drink from the well-to-do.
The Underhill Historical Society is sponsoring a talk by local author, Stephen Nissenbaum who penned the book " Battle For Christmas" which researched the Puritans and the early history of Christmas. Nissenbaum is a Professor Emeritus of History from the University of Massachusetts.
