Teach-In on How to Fight Hate in Our Communities

Past event
Dec 14, 2016, 7 to 8:30 PM

A hate symbol that is associated with white supremacist groups was spray painted onto a surface in Craftsbury recently. The symbol represents the SS of Nazi Germany, and carries obvious connotations of anti-Semitism, racism in general, and white supremacy.

Regardless of the intention behind the use of this symbol in this instance, it carries a powerful and real weight of hatred, and is frightening for people who feel targeted by it, including Jewish people, people of color, LGBTQ folks, and their allies. High rates of hate symbol use alert many people to the need for active support for populations in our communities that are targets of such acts, and to the vital importance of creating multicultural and safer communities that are diverse and inclusive.

Silence allows hatred to flourish and grow. Speaking up with strength, empathy, and clarity is essential to building whole communities. We are committed to responding rapidly, transparently, and unequivocally.

The Art House, East Craftsbury Presbyterian Church, and Sterling College invite you to participate in a teach-in on the history and significance of hate speech and valuable tips, tools, and perspectives on how to fight hate in our communities. This will also be an opportunity to gather with neighbors to consider further action steps.

The teach-in will be held on Wednesday, Dec 14, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m at the Craftsbury Public Library.
