Earnest Shackleton and The Endurance Expedition Remembered, Part I - - -
One hundred years ago, renowned explorer Ernest Shackleton and a crew of twenty-seven men set sail on The Endurance for the South Atlantic where it was imprisoned and crushed by sea ice near Antarctica, leaving the crew stranded. It nearly cost them their lives, but all twenty-eight of them would survive. Theirs is one of the greatest adventure and survival stories of the twentieth century.

First, the Waterbury Public Library will host a community-wide Winter Movie Night with a showing of the 2000 documentary, “The Endurance”, narrated by Liam Neeson (Rated G). It recounts this ill-fated expedition with footage of the actual locations, and interviews with surviving relatives of key expedition members, plus archived audio interviews with expedition members, and a generous helping of the footage and still photos shot on the expedition.

We hope you'll join us for this adventure in reading, watching, discussing, and learning about the dramatic story of Sir Ernest Shackleton, his crew, his ship, The Endurance, and their failed attempt to reach Antarctica. You’ll have the opportunity to consider, among other things, the power of vision, courage, and perseverance, the nature of leadership, and the spirit of adventure and exploration.

Free and open to the public. Suitable for ages 10 through adult.

Then, Join us for Part II on Monday, December 19, for a “Dessert & Discussion” program. Pick up a copy of Caroline Alexander’s “The Endurance: Shackleton’s Legendary Antarctic Expedition” (courtesy of the VT Humanities Council) available at the Library’s Information Desk to prepare for the discussion. Limited copies available!
