BEETHOVEN Overture to Egmont
HINDEMITH Mathis der Mahler
TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No. 4

Beethoven loved drama, history, and revolution, and his overture to Egmont contains plenty of all three. Inspired by Goethe's historical drama, Egmont tells the story of Count Egmont leading the Flemish resistance against the Spaniards in the Netherlands. Although Egmont is publicly beheaded (spoiler alert), he becomes a martyr and the revolution is ultimately successful. This overture marks the beginning of an incredibly creative part of Beethoven's career, prompting him to write some of his most memorable and powerful music in the years that followed.

Mathis der Maler is the most famous and often performed work of German composer Paul Hindemith. Written in 1934, the work served as the source material for his opera of the same name, which focused on the duty of an artist to continue to create, regardless of political considerations. This was not well received by the Nazi Party; Hindemith moved to Switzerland and the 1938 premiere was in Zurich.

We close the program with Tchaikovsky's beloved fourth symphony. This composition was a breakthrough for Tchaikovsky. Inspired by Beethoven's 5th symphony, the composer introduces a chilling "fate" theme in the opening movement, which returns several times throughout the symphony.
