Join the first annual Hunger Mountain Christmas Bird Count!
This winter marks the 117th annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count which will take place between December 14 and January 5. Thousands of volunteer citizen scientists across the continent spend hours driving, walking, and snowshoeing in search of birds. This is the longest running citizen science program in the world, and the data collected in this long-running wildlife census is used by Audubon and other organizations to assess the health of bird populations, and to help guide conservation action. Each count occurs in a designated circle, 15 miles in diameter, and is led by an experienced birder, or designated “compiler”.
There is a new circle this year, the Hunger Mountain CBC, centered around Waterbury and including portions of Bolton, Duxbury, Middlesex, Moretown, and Stowe. The Hunger Mountain CBC will take place on December 26th, and we are looking for volunteers. Birding experience is preferred but not required. All you have to bring is enthusiasm! You can participate as either a team member working with experienced birders to survey a specific area, or as a feeder watcher counting birds from the comfort of home. Either way we need your help!
