Sterling College and Slow Food Vermont will be celebrating local food and farming on campus for Terra Madre Day, and they are inviting the community to join them.

On December 10, starting at 4 p.m. in Dunbar Dining Hall, Slow Food Vermont and Sterling College will be holding a Terra Madre Day potluck on the Sterling College campus. This potluck will celebrate both Terra Madre Day as well as Sterling College’s leadership among colleges for using real food in its dining service.

Participants are invited to bring a labeled dish to share with the Sterling College and local communities. Dishes should be labeled for allergens and meat products.

“As we plan this potluck, Sterling College is submitting this year’s results to the Real Food Challenge, and we’re confident that we will continue to be the top college in the country for eating local, sustainable, fair-trade, and humane food,” said Nicole Civita, the Assistant Director for the Rian Fried Center for Sustainable Agriculture & Food Systems, and faculty member in Sustainable Food Systems. “Our food on campus is both delicious and revolutionary because we consider the entire food cycle, from seed to compost, and we pay extra attention to the ways in which food creates connection, shapes identity, and inspires everyday elation. We want to celebrate that Sterling College’s food on campus is slow, sustainable, and is in harmony with our local foodshed.”

“This year’s theme for the Terra Madre Day is ‘Love the Earth, Defend the Future,’ and Sterling College is doing both by its commitment to both sustainable agriculture and by supporting local farmers,” said Stephan Cantor, the Regional Captain for Slow Food Vermont for the Northeast Kingdom. “Communities around the globe will be celebrating local eating, agricultural biodiversity, and sustainable food production on Terra Madre Day, and we thought a potluck would be a wonderful way to bring our local community together.”

This is the sixth annual Terra Madre Day, Slow Food International’s day to promote the diversity of food traditions and production, as well as to demonstrate how its network is using its creativity and knowledge to express love for the planet and defend the future for the next generations. This year’s Terra Madre Day calls special attention to Slow Food’s first international fundraising campaign recently launched to help collect the much-needed funds for Slow Food to continue its activities independently as a non-profit organization and keep its role as the protector of biodiversity.

Representatives of Slow Food Vermont will be on hand at the potluck to discuss the organization. For more information about Slow Food Vermont, visit www.slowfoodvermont.org.
