Dear Neighbors,
I hope you all have had a wonderful Thanksgiving. This coming Monday, the City Council will convene its second of two meetings for the month of November. Following a brief City Council meeting with Mayor presiding at 7pm in Contois Auditorium, we will convene our Council meeting.
We will be voting on a Special Event Indoor Entertainment Permit for one day only at the Growler Garage on Pine Street. Following two additional commission appointments, we will have a public hearing and a vote on two ordinances, one regarding off-street parking and the other regarding neighborhood activity center zoning at the proposed development, Cambrian Rise (former Burlington College property).
We will be voting on four resolutions Monday evening:
• A resolution in support of Syrian refugees in Burlington; the resolution calls for the Burlington City Council to declare its support for resettlement of United Nations registered Syrian refugees in Burlington and calls on other municipalities to do the same,
• A resolution reaffirming Burlington as a welcoming and inclusive city for immigrants; the resolution calls for the appointment of an ad hoc committee of Councilors to work with the Administration to create formal City policies consistent with ensuring that Burlington continues to be a welcoming and inclusive city for immigrants,
• A resolution that would ask the Charter Change committee to meet regarding a proposal to increase Councilor compensation; this resolution asks the Charter Change to craft a proposal to increase compensation by $2,000 a year, any proposal would need to go before the voters for your approval,
• A resolution regarding eviction crisis plan and protocol for public housing agencies; this resolution asks for the creation of a committee of housing groups to work with the Burlington Police and the Howard Center to develop a plan and protocol that would include available option to prevent eviction as well as a communication and notificiation procedure regarding people in crisis, the availability of alternative housing options and better options to serve eviction notice to peple with mental illness.
As with all Council meetings, please keep in mind that you are always welcome to come and speak to the Council on any subject you wish during our Public Forum which begins at 7:30pm. Clickable agenda items can be found on the City's website via board docs at: http://www.boarddocs.com/vt/burlingtonvt/Board.nsf/Public All Council meetings are televised live on BT Channel 317 and streamed live to your computer or phone.
As always, I welcome your questions and concerns. Please be in touch over the weekend and on Monday.
I hope you enjoy the rest of this festive holiday weekend.
My best,
Karen
