Cellochan was created in Ann Arbor, MI. in 1995 and has now moved to the Mad River Valley. It is a cello program for all ages and levels that emphasizes the value of self-acceptance, awareness, and openness to the creative process. Suzanne’s students include the very young; conservatory bound cellists, amateurs, and those who simply want to make the cello part of their lives.

Her 25 years as a Zen Buddhist inform her ability to teach students to accept the challenges and inevitable mistakes along the artistic path in a meaningful and joyful way. Through relaxation and balancing techniques students learn to be freer and more authentic at the cello. Suzanne’s goal is to engage with each student in a way that best serves his/her uniqueness and talent. Playing with her students in the lesson is one of her greatest pleasures.

To help students experience
the joy of music making.
To employ the cello in the work
of excellence & self esteem.
To cultivate ways to
to serve others through music

"Suzanne Smith is a very gifted cellist. Very sensitive, extremely intelligent, and a most pleasant character. I recommend her most highly.”
