Saturday November 5th, 2016 in Montpelier
9:30 - 10:30 am
Meet at the TD Bank drive-thru on Main St. and School St.
We'll march to the branch on Main St. and State St and then back.
The Sacred Stone Camp was set up April 1, 2016 to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline. The planned path of the pipeline was rerouted through indigenous land in a poor area of North Dakota, in part due to the threat it would have posed to the water supply of Bismarck, a predominately white population center. Construction will destroy sacred burial sites and its existence exposes the area to even more environmental and human health risks.
In recent weeks, there has been extreme escalation of violence against the Water Protectors on the ground in North Dakota. These people have the right to protect their water supply and their lives, and the media is largely ignoring the situation, despite thousands showing up to the site. TD Bank is one of the major financial backers of the DAPL project, and there is a nation campaign to put pressure on lenders to cut off lines of credit to the pipeline.
We are asking for anyone who holds accounts with TD Bank to close them with us THIS Saturday. And we need others to provide a public presence by standing outside the bank with banners and signs. We have pledges to divest $30,000 worth of funds already, and we aim to grow that amount 10-fold in the month of November. We encourage people to wear blue to symbolize the water jeopardized by the pipeline.
This is in coordination with a national campaign to show support for Standing Rock. See https://nodaplsolidarity.org for more information.
This event is organized by Central Vermont Showing Up For Racial Justice.
