Kingsland Bay State Park Underwater Power Line

Past event

All people who treasure Kingsland Bay State Park should become aware about plans by Anbaric Corporation and National Grid to place a high voltage DC power line along the bottom of Lake Champlain from northern New York to Addison County. The plans call for the cable to emerge from the lake in Kingsland Bay State Park, and then run underground to a 400-megawatt converter station in New Haven, VT.

The power line will run beneath or subjacent to the swimming area at the State park. It will emerge from the lake near the overlook where visitors first see the lake as they enter the park.

A nonprofit organization has been created called Friends of Kingsland Bay (FoKB), to monitor this project and express concern about any negative impact on those who use and care about this very special place. We have kept track of the development process and met with representatives of the developer as well as the VT Agency of Natural Resources, which has responsibility for our state parks. We urged the developers and ANR to choose an alternate place for the cable to exit the lake.

This meeting is a time for us to update you on what has been happening, and get your ideas about how we should proceed. The developers have just filed their application for a Certificate of Public Good (CPG) from the Vermont Public Service Board, so we need to consider what options are available to us to protect the bay.

The FoKB strategy so far has not been to oppose the project itself, but simply the choice of Kingsland Bay for the exit point. While we have received a polite hearing, we do not believe that a change is being seriously considered.

Please come to the meeting on November 2, 7:00 to 8:30 PM, at the Vergennes Congregational Church (downstairs meeting room), 30 South Water Street in Vergennes.
