Gripping game warden stories will be the topic at the Poultney Public Library Saturday, November 5th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. where “Vermont Wild, Adventures of Fish & Game Wardens” author Megan Price will sign books and encourage fans to share their stories.

Former game warden Norman Brown of Wells and deputy warden Terry Williams of Poultney feature prominently in Price’s latest book, with a charging bull moose on the cover. “Warden Brown and his deputies quietly pursued one poacher for years. He was very clever and always just out of reach,” Price said. “The tenacity, courage and bit of luck required to stop this poaching operation is truly remarkable.”

Price has been called a “folklore artist” for her ability to breathe life into yellowed, hand written police affidavits. Humor figures prominently in her stories, which are enjoyed by ages 9 to 99. “Readers understand how dangerous a warden’s job can be. There’s no need to dwell on it,” Price noted. “But there are also funny things that happen. Danger and irony are often intertwined. The pairing can produce a story worth writing.”

“Vermont Wild” is taught in classrooms, read at deer camp and even used as bedtime stories for preschoolers. There is no bad language or gratuitous violence. Each story is preceded by an illustration and the print is extra large to help children and aging adults read them. Tales are told as if a warden was speaking to you around a campfire. “Vermont Wild” is available at Hermit Hill in Poultney, Phoenix Books in Rutland, the Wells Country Store and Kinney Drugs in Bomoseen. Copies will also be for sale at the event.

“I am always hunting for new stories, so I encourage retired wardens and deputies from any state to stop in and introduce themselves Nov. 5th,” Price added.
