Bellydancers Perform with Grace
Hafla for Humanity Comes to Grace Church

RUTLAND, Vt., October 23, 2016
Grace Congregational Church will host a performance of Middle Eastern dance, called a hafla in Arabic, on Oct. 23 at 7 pm in the Fellowship Hall. Solo and group performances will highlight a variety of styles including Lebanese, Greek, Turkish, and Egyptian.

This is a family-friendly event, with opportunity for audience participation. The event is free. Donations are welcome, to benefit the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program and the AMAR Foundation's Escaping Darkness Campaign, which helps women and girls escape ISIS captivity.

The show's organizer, Alaia, who will also be performing, says she is excited to have so many dancers coming together for this event. "These are social dances in the Middle East. While there are more formal stage versions, at the heart of the dance are social gatherings, like weddings and parties," she explains. “I want our community to learn more about Middle Eastern culture," she says, to create a more positive conversation around the arrival of Syrian refugees in Vermont.
