Shape note singing is one of America’s oldest musical and social gathering activities. Also known as Sacred Harp singing, shape note singing is four-part a cappella singing of hymns, fuging tunes and anthems using shape and syllable notation. An inclusive and democratic community singing tradition that was preserved in the rural South throughout the last century, it is now experiencing a revival with groups learning to sing the music throughout the US and Europe.
Whether you respond to the pulsing beat, the rich harmonies or the powerful poetry of a Sacred Harp singing, you are joining generations of Americans who have found meaning and community through this music.
Join us for an introductory singing school, which includes:
• History of shape note singing in America
• Rudiments overview
• Choosing which part to sing
• Reading music in 4 shapes
• Leading & pitching
• Regional differences and singing styles
• Screening of excerpts from the documentary Awake My Soul: The Story of the Sacred Harp
We will sing from the 1991 Denson revision of The Sacred Harp, a much-loved shape note songbook that has been in continuous use since its original publication in 1844. Songbooks will be available to borrow and purchase.
