The Native Life-Way: an Open House on Isle La Motte

Past event
Oct 15, 2016, 10 AM to 3 PM

Would you like to learn about the native way of life of this region in the 17th and 18th centuries? Would you like to visit a wigwam encampment as was once used by the Abenaki peoples? On Saturday, October 15 from 10:00 to 3:00, Sharon Powers, with expertise and knowledge of Native American material culture, will hold an Open House in her wigwam encampment, set up on the Goodsell Ridge Preserve on Isle La Motte.

She will demonstrate materials used in different seasons of the year and will talk about the use of animal pelts, native plants, food preparation, games and crafts. Children with parents will enjoy learning a few Abenaki words and possibly a song or two. Teachers may be interested in how an appreciation of the native way of life can be taught in local schools.

To visit Sharon’s 18th Century replica of an Abenaki encampment, visitors can park on Quarry Road near the Isle La Motte Historical Society buildings. Just across the road from the Historical Society, on land which is part of the Goodsell Ridge Preserve, a sign will indicate a short path through the woods on which markers will lead to the encampment.

The Goodsell Ridge Preserve is owned and managed by the Isle La Motte Preservation Trust. For more information, email us at info@ilmpt.org. or visit ilmpt.org.
