My family was intensely struggling with 2 children suffering from RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) earlier this month. Much of the last 2 weeks we were consumed with managing their symptoms and supporting their recovery. I have said many prayers and been filled with gratitude for all my medical training, especially my herbal training and the gifts our plant allies give to us. This has left me wondering what do people do when they don't have this training?
You might not know that Chinese medicine has a lot to offer for treating respiratory infections, and the lingering post-infection symptoms. So I thought I would share about the formulas we offer at Green Dragon Medicine that I consider tried and true for pediatric cases.
When my kiddos are sick I rely on 2 pediatric formulas from Kan's Gentle Warriors pediatric line. I have found when treated early my children often recover quickly without the lingering phlegm so many kids experience. Here's the breakdown:
Windbreaker: Use at the first sign of acute illness, aka low fever, sore throat, runny nose, and ear infections too. If this doesn't successfully stop the progression into a cough I switch to the second formula.
Chest Relief: The herbs in this formula help clear the heat of fevers, while focusing strongly on clearing phlegm from the lungs and relieving cough, without being too harsh on little bodies.
