Marble is one of the greatest elements of the art and architecture of the United States. The mission of the Vermont Marble Museum is to tell the story of Vermont's marble industry as well as the stories of the diverse people who spent their lives on the enormously difficult, skilled work of quarrying, finishing, and carving marble. Vermont's marble is one of its greatest gifts to the nation.

For over a century marble was a central material in the creation and decoration of buildings, memorials, and art throughout the US. For most of that time, the Vermont Marble Company was the world's largest marble company. Some of the greatest monuments of the United States, such as the U.S. Supreme Court building and the Jefferson Memorial are made of Vermont marble. The tomb of the Unknown Soldier was created by the Vermont Marble Company. Tens of thousands of Vermont marble gravestones adorn our national cemeteries. Vermont marble was used as well in numerous other public buildings such as state capitols, courthouses and post offices, and in private ones such as banks and university buildings. The Rockefeller Center lobby contains Vermont marble. Vermont marble was part of thousands of our nation's proudest and most meaningful structures and memorials.
