REclaimED offers a place for members to make, learn and grow their skills and success with trade and craft work. A makerspace is like a gym where members pay to use the tools and receive a discount on classes. Our focus is on youth education, but we have opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. Come by during open hours, or contact us to find out more! Find us along the rail trail across from TAPS Tavern and behind the Original Vermont Store.

This class will introduce how to set up a natural indigo dye vat as well as introducing some traditional Japanese techniques for tie dye, known as shibori. Participants are encouraged to bring 2-3 items of clothing or other textiles they wish to dye, preferably of natural material such as cotton or wool (though cotton blends are often fine). Participants will leave class with their beautifully dyed indigo textiles and the resources to be able to repeat the process at home on other items. Please... read more ▼

Instructor Bio -
Aja Ewing (she/her) is a 3rd generation fiber artist who specialises in fiber education and how textiles are connected with our natural resources. She has a BS in Natural Resource Management from Green Mountain College and a MS in Wildlife Conservation and Management from Unity University. She has 20+ experience in spinning and dyeing as well as knitting, crocheting and weaving. She's spent the last 5 years in pollinator studies, including her masters course, Cornell's Master Beekeepers course, as well as working for commercial native plants nurseries and apiaries. Through her education she has focused on ways that our textile industry impacts our natural environment and ways to improve the ways we source, process and market textiles in a method that can reduce harm or even benefit native pollinators. Aja's teaching style is engaging and hands-on and she takes care to create a learning environment that is a safe place for all. She raises sheep and bees as well as sells her handspun yarn out of her farm in Orwell, VT.

This class will teach the basics of drafting, spinning and plying fiber into yarn. This class will also go into how to select fiber as a beginning spinner and introduce concepts around fiber preparation. Participants are welcome to bring their own drop spindle and fiber or purchase the necessary materials (4oz of fiber and a drop spindle) from the instructor.
