Speaker Event: Waste Management on the Long Trail

Mar 6, 2025, 7 to 8 PM

Seeking some inspiration this chilly winter? Join the Green Mountain Club for the annual winter speaker series, featuring stories of adventure, athleticism, science, and growth. Programs are free to attend and open to all.

Join us on Thursday, March 6 at 7 p.m. at the Green Mountain Club's headquarters in Waterbury Center for the presentation "No More Pits: A New Era of Waste Management on the Long Trail," a look into how backcountry waste management has evolved on our trails over the years. In fall 2024, the last unpleasant and unsustainable pit privy on the Long Trail System was finally decommissioned and the decades-long project to convert to composting models was completed. How did the Green Mountain Club make it to this point, and what still lies ahead? In this presentation, Field Coordinator Nigel Bates will discuss the past, present, and future of waste management on the Long Trail.
