Daddy Long Legs - The Musical

… funny, poignant, and thoughtful

What would you do if you just inherited your uncle's estate and found yourself sitting in HIS seat on the board of trustees at a local orphanage? The musical begins in that orphanage with 17 year old Jerusha struggling to fulfill her orphanage duties - - - completely unaware that her life is about to change. Jervis, the 25 year old inheritor, wants to be helpful but doesn't want to impose a feeling of debt - - - so he concocts a scheme for him to remain anonymous while funding Jerusha's college education.

Thus begins the story of Daddy Long Legs. Through Jerusha's required letters to her anonymous benefactor, we learn about her experiences at college - - - and watch her grow into a successful and independent woman. Along the way, we also watch Jervis learn that it's often easier to give than to receive. The themes in the show are many layered - - - notions of family, the role of charity, shame, resilience, deceit, discovery, and personal growth.

Based on the classic 1912 novel by Jean Webster, the musical was created by librettist John Caird (Les Miserables) and composer Paul Gordon (Jane Eyre). The show features two musically talented actors, Hannah Logan and Elliot Franklin - - - accompanied by accomplished musicians, Dieuwke Davydov on cello, Michael Corn on guitars, Serena Eddy on percussion, and Tim Guiles on piano. The story is often fun and playful. The songs are filled with tunes that you will be humming for weeks. There are also deep thoughts to ponder.
